Why So Many Guitars?
In efforts to achieve a wide range of tones and textures in our live rig, I play a variety of guitars in many different tunings.
Each guitar has its own unique sound; a result of its shape, tone wood composition, string guage, amplification and of course, tuning. I believe that non-standard tunings can lend individual songs a more distinctive sound. To enhance the sound of a standard six-string instrument, two or more of the strings may even be tuned to the same note, or the same note an octave apart. The ringing strings often sound "bigger" or more dynamic. This is not always achieveable in standard tuning.
In a live act, there are few things more boring than listening to someone tune a guitar between every song. To minimize this for our audience and to present a wider range of music, our live set list requires the use of several instruments. Occasionally, a very slight change in tuning can be made without switching instruments and interrupting the flow.
